Funny Games movie
Warning: this is not a fun film to watch.
This movie is brutal, but it has a purpose.
There are two versions of this movie. The latest one is a shot-for-shot remake, by the same director. The version which you watch does not really matter.
I watched the original one, but I would watch the remake if I decide to rewatch it.
The movie is about two men who hold a family hostage and torture them.
This might sound like something Saw like to you, but trust me it is not. It is much better than it sounds. It is a pretty aware movie.
Everything that follows contains spoilers!
This is a movie which talks to the viewer. It can be interpreted in many ways.
My first interpretation of the movie
I disliked the message which I saw in the movie.
People watch horror for the gore and for entertainment and you are responsible for wanting to see characters die, so you are part of the problem.
Why I disagree
Horror is healthy exploration to me. It makes you think about things which can and do happen. It makes you question things, which you might otherwise never question.
Horror makes it possible to think about dead and it is important to think about dead. It also can be used to make sure that we don’t forget history (Men Behind The Sun).
It is obvious that some movies don’t have a message, but it can still be art. A Nightmare on Elm Street for example, does not have a very strong message in my opinion. It does have great art though, and I love it.
I would claim that horror is the most important genre in film. Most people just only know the horror movies which aren’t great. The biggest minds in film usually start with horror.
Horror allows you to have a discussion about things which you don’t usually speak about, you can gain different perspectives from others.
It wants to make you question why you enjoy horror.
- Are slasher movies really worth your time?
- Is every part of a horror movie needed?
- Should every horror movie contain the same basic story elements?
Should you see it?
I think that people who are interested in film should see it. Regular people should consider giving it a watch if they know a bit about slasher movies.
