Ju-On, The Grudge franchise
Ok, lets define the timelines before we start reviewing this. The stories of the different timelines are different.
The short films are probably separate stories. There might be some other mistakes in how I described the timelines. Feel free to contact me about those.

The Original Ju-on movies
I haven’t seen these movies yet, but I have links for them if you want to see them. I do want to check them out some day.
Sadako vs Kayako
Sadako is the girl from The Ring (and Ringu) and Kayako is the girl from The Grudge (and Ju-on).
I haven’t seen this one. I want to watch it some day. I have seen the remake from Ringu, but I didn’t really like it. The original Japanese one might be better.
The American reboots
It is too bad that I haven’t seen the original Japanese movies. It might be even better than the ones I saw.
I saw the one from 2004. They apparently rebooted it again in 2020. I usually don’t recommend remakes. The original one is often better. The story isn’t fantastic. It is more of a jumpscare movie. Don’t get me wrong though. The Grudge has a decent story. It are pretty iconic movies.
These movies use many jumpscares, but the noises which the Grudge makes are creepy too. I haven’t seen any of the following links.
I actually have seen this one.
It wasn’t too bad, but it was different. It is not a personal favorite for me. I do respect that they referenced real murders (which deserve more attention).
Real murder references
The real murder references weren’t always clear, and probably confusing for some people.
You probably want to read about The Nagoya Pregnant Ripper Case before you watch it. Many might see that part as Japan just being crazy, but that scene was based on the murder.
There is a subplot based on Tsutomu Miyazaki, AKA the “Otaku Murderer” or “The Little Girl Murderer”. You don’t have to know more about this murder.
The other real murders are usually news pieces, so you don’t have to look them up. I suggest looking up Junko Furuta though. It is very dark, but I think that more people should know about that case.
The story was hard to follow in my opinion. The story is disturbing, but the scenes aren’t that graphical or scary compared to other movies. It is all over the place. It is pretty confusing and it can feel like it doesn’t goes any where. It is interesting though.
Give the series time. The better stuff starts during the fourth episode.
This can be an interesting watch, but I am not sure of I would recommend it. It isn’t over the top at scares or at gore in my opinion.
It is worth a try, maybe just watch the first season and decide for yourself if you want to see the next seasons. There is only one season released at the moment though.
