Lunacy movie

Warning: this is not a fun film to watch.
This movie is brutal and contains some offensive material, but it has a purpose.

Story

Lunacy is about a man who is trying to recover form the recent death of his mother, who was in a mental institution. He is haunted by violent hallucinations of being stuffed into a straitjacket.

It is based on the stories of Marquis de Sade and Edgar Allen Poe. I can’t say much more, without spoiling too much.

Review

Story

Wow, this was good. It makes you think. The movie is a commentary on the mental institution system. Marquis de Sade is a character in this movie, and he acts like you would expect from him. Lunacy is pretty packed with commentary on things and stories. It delivers. I would highly recommend it.

Much more interesting than the movie “Salò” in my opinion. The things which happen are graphically not that disturbing compared with the acts in Salò. It is more disturbing in a mental way.

Effects, pacing and music

Lunacy has cool stop-motion effects. The effects in general are pretty interesting. The pacing could have been faster, but I think that the move really shouldn’t move any faster, so pacing is good.

I don’t think that there was a ton of music, but the music which was used worked.

Extras

The word sadist is based on the name “Marquis de Sade”. Marquis de Sade wrote “The 120 Days of Sodom” in prison. It was never completed. Salò is a movie based on it. I like how Marquis is played in this movie. It is great.

The film is loosely based on two short stories, “The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether” and “The Premature Burial”, by Edgar Allan Poe.

The commentary is mostly about absolute freedom versus control and punishment. There is also some commentary on religion, but that is likely because Marquis just was that kind of person. This has to be the most accurate movie about Marquis that I have seen.
